the result of adam's sin

June 15, 2025

Gen 2:16-17

16  And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;

17 of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.

Gen 3:1

1 Now the serpent was more cunning (crafty) than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?"

HIDING FROM GOD

Gen 3:6-24

6  So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food (lust of the flesh), that it was pleasant to the eyes (lust of the eyes), and a tree desirable to make one wise (pride of life), she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. (see 1 Jn 2:16)

7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

8  And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

9  Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?"

10  So he said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself."

11  And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?"

12  Then the man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate."

13  And the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

14  So the LORD God said to the serpent: "Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.

15  And I will put enmity (hostility, hatred) between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel."

16  To the woman He said: "I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception (pregnancy); In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you."

17  Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': "Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life.

18  Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, , and you shall eat the herb of the field.

19  In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, and to dust you shall return."

20  And Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

21  Also for Adam and his wife the LORD God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.

22  Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever"—

23  therefore the LORD God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.

24  So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

Rom 3

10  As it is written: "there is none righteous, no, not one;

11  there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God.

12  They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one."

23  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

Rom 5:12

12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned

WITHOUT EXCUSE

Rom 1:18-32

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

19  because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.

20  For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,

21  because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

22 Professing to be wise, they became fools,

23  and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man - and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24  Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves,

25  who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26  For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.

27  Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

28  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;

29  being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers,

30  backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31  undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful;

32  who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

The Greek word used for "gave over" (paradidomi) is a strong term that can mean handing someone over for punishment or allowing them to be dominated by something. This is not just passive abandonment but an active decision by God to let people reap the results of their rebellion.

1 Cor 6:9-11

9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,

10  nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

11  And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL

Rom 1:16-17

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "the just shall live by faith."

Heb 7:16

16 who (Christ) has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life.

Heb 7:25

25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

Heb 9:12

12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

mutual faith

June 8, 2025

Rom 1:7-12

7  To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints (Christians, holy people): Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

8  First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.

9  For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers,

10  making request if, by some means, now at last I may find a way in the will of God to come to you.

11  For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established—

12  that is, that I may be encouraged together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.

THERE IS ONLY ONE FAITH! (Eph 4:5)

Titus 1:4

4 To Titus, a true son in our common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.

2 Pet 1:1

1 Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:

2 Cor 4:13

13 And since we have the same spirit of faith (pistis), according to what is written, "I believed (pisteuo) and therefore I spoke," we also believe and therefore speak

SHARING OUR MUTUAL FAITH WITH ONE ANOTHER

Heb 10:23-25

23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

24  And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,

25  not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

Eph 4:29

29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

Col 3:16

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Phm 1:4-6

4 I thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers,

5  hearing of your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints,

6 that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

sharing (koinonia) – fellowship, communion, communication

effective (energēs) – energetic, powerful, fruitful

acknowledgment (epignōsis) – knowledge, discernment

That the communication that we share in our common fellowship with Christ and one-another, will be powerful, fruitful and accomplish much, because we know what we are talking about, that every good thing that has ever happened to us has come from our union with Christ.

the power of the gospel

June 1, 2025

When Paul wrote Romans about A.D. 56, he had not yet been to Rome, but he had been preaching the gospel since his conversion in A.D. 35. During the previous ten years he had founded churches throughout the Mediterranean world. Now he was nearing the end of his third missionary journey.

Romans is commonly considered the greatest exposition of Christian doctrine anywhere in Scripture.

Rom 1:16

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

gospel (euangelion) good news, including both the promise of salvation and its fulfillment by the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ

power (dunamis) energy, power, might, great force, great ability, strength

salvation (soteria) deliverance, preservation, soundness, prosperity, happiness, rescue, general well-being

Rom 1:17

17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "the just shall live by faith."

righteousness (dikaiosune) just, the quality of being right

faith (pistis) conviction, confidence, trust, belief, reliance, trustworthiness, and persuasion. (noun)

Jn 6:53

53 Then Jesus said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.

1 Cor 10:16

16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

1 Cor 15:1-4

1  Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand,

2   by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you — unless you believed in vain.

3   For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

4   and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures

Gal 2:20

20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Eph 2:4-9

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,

5  even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

6  and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

7  that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

8  For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

9  not of works, lest anyone should boast.

THE GOSPEL IS THE GOOD NEWS –

IN CHRIST WE HAVE VICTORY OVER…

the flesh (self, old man) (Rom 6:6; 8:13)

sin (Rom 6:7; 1 Cor 15:54-57)

death (Rom 6:8; 1 Cor 15:54-57)

satan (Rev 12:11; 1 Jn 2:13)

the world (Col 2:20; 1 Jn 5:4-5)

the law (Rom 7:4; Gal 2:19)

THE GOSPEL ANNOUNCES THAT THE KINGDOM OF GOD HAS COME

Mar 1:15

1 The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel

Mat 9:35

35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

THE GOSPEL WILL INVOLVE SUFFERING

2 Tim 1:8-10

8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of

God,

9  who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ

Jesus before time began,

10  but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel

Rom 8:16-18

16  The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

18  For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

PERVERTING THE GOSPEL IS DEADLY SERIOUS

Gal 1:6-7

6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel,

7  which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.

Gal 1:6-7 (The Passion Translation)

6 I am shocked over how quickly you have strayed away from the Anointed One who called you to himself by his loving mercy. I’m frankly astounded that you now embrace a ”distorted gospel”!

7  That is a “fake gospel” that is simply not true. There is only one gospel — the gospel of the Messiah! Yet you have allowed those who mingle law with grace to confuse you with lies.

Gal 1:8-9

8  But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed (anathema - damned, total destruction).

9  As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.

THE GOSPEL IS “THE” FOREVER COVENANT

Heb 7:16

16 who (Christ) has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life.

Heb 9:12

12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

Heb 13:20-21

20 Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

21  make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

covenant (diatheke) an agreed upon plan to which both parties subscribe. In the Bible, God initiated the whole action, set the conditions, and defined as a decree a declaration of purposes.

A covenant is more personal than a contract — it involves loyalty, allegiance and is completely unselfish … it requires the whole heart. It is fellowship and relationship.

Rev 14:6

6  Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth — to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people

Rom 1:16-17

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "the just shall live by faith."

DRAWN BY THE FATHER

Jn 6:37-40

37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.

38  For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

39  This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.

40  And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son, and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

Jn 6:44

44  No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.

draws (helkuō) - drags

James 2:6 – the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts

Jn 21:11 - dragged the net to land, full of large fish

Acts 16:19 – seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace

Acts 21:30 – seized Paul, and dragged him out of the temple

Jn 6:45

45  It is written in the prophets, 'and they shall all be taught by God.' Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.

Jn 6:65

65 And He said, "Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father."

Mat 16:16-17

16 Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

17  Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

CHOSEN BY THE FATHER

Rom 8:29-30

29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

30  Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

The verbs used in this verse—predestined, called, justified, and glorified—are all in the aorist tense in Greek. The aorist tense typically indicates a completed action, which suggests that Paul is emphasizing the certainty of God's work in salvation.

Eph 1:3-5

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,

4  just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,

5  having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will

Eph 2:8-9

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

9  not of works, lest anyone should boast.

SALVATION, GRACE, FAITH and TRUTH FROM THE WORD OF GOD

Jn 1:14-17

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

15  John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.' "

16  And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

17  For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Rom 1:16

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

Rom 10:17

17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

NEWBIRTH, REVELATION and CONVICTION BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

Jn 3:3-5

3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

4  Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"

5  Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

Eph 1:17-19

17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,

18  the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

19  and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power …

Jn 16:7-8

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Holy Spirit) will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

8  And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

convict – convince, prove, rebuke

Act 2:37 (Peter’s message after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit)

37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"

GOD’S GOODNESS BRINGS REPENTANCE

Rom 2:4

4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness (kindness), forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?

leads – this Greek verb is in the present active indicative third-person singular form. This means it describes an ongoing action—God's goodness is continually leading toward repentance.

Rev 3:19-20

19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.

20  Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

THE PATHWAY TO CHRIST

Lk 9:28-31

28 Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He (Jesus) took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray.

29  As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening.

30  And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah,

31  who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

Elijah was a prophet who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of King Ahab in the 9th century BC. His name means "Jehovah is my God" in Hebrew. Elijah is known for his dramatic confrontations with King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, his miracles, and his eventual ascension to heaven in a fiery chariot.

1 Kings 16:29-33

29 In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab the son of Omri became king over Israel; and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty-two years.

30  Now Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD, more than all who were before him.

31  And it came to pass, as though it had been a trivial thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians; and he went and served Baal and worshiped him.

32  Then he set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal, which he had built in Samaria.

33  And Ahab made a wooden image. Ahab did more to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

Jezebel promoted the worship of false gods in Israel, harassed and killed God’s prophets, and arranged for an innocent man to be falsely charged and executed.

Baal was a prominent deity in the ancient Canaanite religion, often associated with fertility, storms, and agriculture. The name "Baal" means "lord" or "owner" and was used to refer to various local gods, but in the Bible, it primarily represents a false god that the Israelites were repeatedly warned against worshipping.

1 Kings 17:1-24

1  And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word."

2 Then the word of the LORD came to him, (Elijah) saying,

3  "Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan.

4  And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there."

5  So he went and did according to the word of the LORD, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan.

6  The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.

7  And it happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

8  Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying,

9  "Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you."

10  So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, indeed a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, "Please bring me a little water in a cup, that I may drink."

11  And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, "Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand."

12  So she said, "As the LORD your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die."

13  And Elijah said to her, "Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son.

14  For thus says the LORD God of Israel: 'The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the LORD sends rain on the earth.' "

15  So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days.

16  The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke by Elijah.

17  Now it happened after these things that the son of the woman who owned the house became sick. And his sickness was so serious that there was no breath left in him.

18  So she said to Elijah, "What have I to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to kill my son?"

19  And he said to her, "Give me your son." So he took him out of her arms and carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.

20  Then he cried out to the LORD and said, "O LORD my God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow with whom I lodge, by killing her son?"

21  And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the LORD and said, "O LORD my God, I pray, let this child's soul come back to him."

22  Then the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived.

23  And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, "See, your son lives!"

24  Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is the truth."

1 Kings 18:1-4

1 And it came to pass after many days that the word of the LORD came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, "Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the earth."

2  So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab; and there was a severe famine in Samaria.

3  And Ahab had called Obadiah, who was in charge of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly.

4  For so it was, while Jezebel massacred the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah had taken one hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty to a cave, and had fed them with bread and water.)

1 Kings 18:17-46

17  Then it happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, "Is that you, O troubler of Israel?"

18  And he answered, "I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father's house have, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and have followed the Baals.

19  Now therefore, send and gather all Israel to me on Mount Carmel, the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table."

Asherah was a Canaanite goddess, considered to be the mother of Baal, the supreme Canaanite deity of fertility, the sun, and storms.

20  So Ahab sent for all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together on Mount Carmel.

21  And Elijah came to all the people, and said, "How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him." But the people answered him not a word.

22  Then Elijah said to the people, "I alone am left a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

23  Therefore let them give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other bull, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it.

24  Then you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who answers by fire, He is God." So all the people answered and said, "It is well spoken."

25  Now Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose one bull for yourselves and prepare it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it."

26  So they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even till noon, saying, "O Baal, hear us!" But there was no voice; no one answered. Then they leaped about the altar which they had made.

27  And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked themand said, "Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened."

28  So they cried aloud, and cut themselves, as was their custom, with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them.

29  And when midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice. But there was no voice; no one answered, no one paid attention.

30  Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me." So all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

31  And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, "Israel shall be your name."

32  Then with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD; and he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed.

33  And he put the wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood, and said “Fill four waterpots with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice and on the wood."

34  Then he said, "Do it a second time," and they did it a second time; and he said, "Do it a third time," and they did it a third time.

35  So the water ran all around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.

36  And it came to pass, at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, "LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word.

37  Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that You are the LORD God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again."

38  Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.

39  Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, "The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!"

40  And Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!" So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the Brook Kishon and executed them there.

41  Then Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain."

42  So Ahab went up to eat and drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; then he bowed down on the ground, and put his face between his knees,

43  and said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea." So he went up and looked, and said, "There is nothing." And seven times he said, "Go again."

44  Then it came to pass the seventh time, that he said, "There is a cloud, as small as a man's hand, rising out of the sea!" So he said, "Go up, say to Ahab, 'Prepare your chariot, and go down before the rain stops you.' "

45  Now it happened in the meantime that the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel.

46  Then the hand of the LORD came upon Elijah; and he girded up his loins and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

1 Kings 19:1-21

1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword.

2  Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time."

3  And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

4  But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, "It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!"

5  Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, "Arise and eat."

6  Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again.

7  And the angel of the LORD came back the second time, and touched him, and said, "Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you."

8  So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.

9  And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and He said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

10  So he said, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life."

11  Then He said, "Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD." And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake;

12  and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

13  So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

14  And he said, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life."

15  Then the LORD said to him: "Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria.

16  Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.

17  It shall be that whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill.

18  Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him."

19  So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle on him.

20  And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, "Please let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you." And he said to him, "Go back again, for what have I done to you?"

21  So Elisha turned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen and slaughtered them and boiled their flesh, using the oxen's equipment, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah, and became his servant.

2 Kings 2:1-15

1 And it came to pass, when the LORD was about to take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.

2  Then Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here, please, for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel." But Elisha said, "As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!" So they went down to Bethel.

3  Now the sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from over you today?" And he said, "Yes, I know; keep silent!"

4  Then Elijah said to him, "Elisha, stay here, please, for the LORD has sent me on to Jericho." But he said, "As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!" So they came to Jericho.

5  Now the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho came to Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from over you today?" So he answered, "Yes, I know; keep silent!"

6  Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here, please, for the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan." But he said, "As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!" So the two of them went on.

7  And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood facing them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan.

8  Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water; and it was divided this way and that, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.

9  And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?" Elisha said, "Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me."

10  So he said, "You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so."

11  Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

12  And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, "My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!" So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces.

13  He also took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan.

14  Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, "Where is the LORD God of Elijah?" And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over.

15  Now when the sons of the prophets who were from Jericho saw him, they said, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." And they came to meet him, and bowed to the ground before him.

James 5:16-18

16  Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months.

18  And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

Gen 2:4-15

4  This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,

5 before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground;

6  but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.

7  And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

8  The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.

9  And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10  Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads.

11  The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.

12  And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there.

13  The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush.

14  The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.

15  Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.

A SECURE PLACE TO BEAR MUCH FRUIT

garden (gan) fenced, hedged around, protected, defended

Eden (Ēdhen) pleasurable, prosperous, delightful, fruitful

MANKIND BEGAN IN THE GARDEN AND ENDS IN THE GARDEN

Rev 22:1-2

1 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

2  In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

GOD’S CHILDREN BECOME THE GARDEN

Is 5:1-7

1  Now let me sing to my Well-beloved a song of my Beloved regarding His (God’s) vineyard: My Well-beloved has a vineyard on a very fruitful hill.

2   He dug it up and cleared out its stones, and planted it with the choicest vine. He built a tower in its midst, and also made a winepress in it; so He expected it to bring forth good grapes, But it brought forth wild grapes.

3  And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, Judge, please, between Me and My vineyard.

4   What more could have been done to My vineyard that I have not done in it? Why then, when I expected it to bring forth good grapes, did it bring forth wild grapes?

5  And now, please let Me tell you what I will do to My vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be burned; and break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down.

6   I will lay it waste; It shall not be pruned or dug, but there shall come up briers and thorns. I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain on it."

7  For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are His pleasant plant. He looked for justice, but behold, oppression; For righteousness, but behold, a cry for help.

Is_51:3

3 For the LORD will comfort Zion, He will comfort all her waste places; He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her  desert like the garden of the LORD; Joy and gladness will be found in it, Thanksgiving and the voice of melody.

Is_58:11

11 The LORD will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

Ez_34:29

29 I will raise up for them a garden of renown, and they shall no longer be consumed with hunger in the land, nor bear the shame of the Gentiles anymore.

Ez_36:35

35 So they will say, 'This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden; and the wasted, desolate, and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.'

Song_4:12-16

12 A garden enclosed (protected) Is my sister, my spouse, a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.

13   Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates with pleasant fruits, Fragrant henna with spikenard,

14  Spikenard and saffron, Calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense, Myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices—

15  A fountain of gardens, A well of living waters, And streams from Lebanon.

16   Awake, O north wind (Holy Spirit), and come, O south! Blow upon my garden, That its spices may flow out. Let my beloved come to his garden and eat its pleasant fruits.

Song 5:1

1 I have come to my garden, my sister, my spouse; I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk. Eat, O friends! Drink, yes, drink deeply, O beloved ones!

Song_6:2

2 My beloved has gone to his garden, To the beds of spices, To feed his flock in the gardens, And to gather lilies.

Jn 15:1-8

1 I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.

2  Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

3  You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

4  Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

5  I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

6  If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

7  If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

8  By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

Gal 5:22-23

22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23  gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Ez 47:12

12  Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.
